Bangladesh Cricket Board Chief Aminul Islam Bulbul Removed, Ad-Hoc Committee Formed
In a major administrative shake-up, Aminul Islam Bulbul has been removed as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board by the National Sports Council (NSC). The decision comes amid growing turmoil within the board and strained relations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The NSC has dissolved the existing board and appointed an ad-hoc committee to manage day-to-day operations until fresh elections are conducted. Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been named as the head of the 11-member committee, which has been tasked with conducting elections within the next 90 days.
Fallout from T20 World Cup Controversy
Sources indicate that Bulbul’s removal is closely linked to the controversy during the ICC T20 World Cup, when Bangladesh’s participation became uncertain. The situation escalated after former interim government advisor Asif Nazrul reportedly opposed the team’s travel to India and suggested shifting matches from cities like Kolkata and Mumbai to Sri Lanka.
The move was seen as a protest related to IPL matters, including the removal of Mustafizur Rahman. During this tense period, Bulbul was criticized for remaining largely passive, failing to take a decisive stand as the situation unfolded.
Internal Crisis and Resignations
The crisis within the board deepened in recent days, with as many as six BCB directors resigning. Reports suggest that dissatisfaction with Bulbul’s leadership and handling of key issues contributed significantly to the exodus. His perceived inaction during critical moments reportedly eroded confidence among board members.
New Leadership and Road Ahead
The newly formed ad-hoc committee includes several prominent figures from Bangladesh cricket, such as Athar Ali Khan and Minhazul Abedin Nannu, among others. Under Tamim Iqbal’s leadership, the committee will oversee operations and ensure a smooth transition toward fresh elections.
According to NSC Director Aminul Ehsan, the decision has already been communicated to the International Cricket Council. While ICC regulations typically restrict government interference in cricket board matters, a ban on Bangladesh appears unlikely, as a clear timeline for elections has been outlined.
Strained India-Bangladesh Cricket Relations
The leadership change comes shortly after the BCB had reached out to the BCCI in an attempt to revive bilateral cricket ties. The recent controversies, however, have complicated relations between the two boards, raising concerns about future engagements.
As Bangladesh cricket enters a transitional phase, the focus will now be on restoring stability, rebuilding trust within the board, and ensuring smooth functioning ahead of upcoming international commitments.
