IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer Fined, Entire Punjab Kings Penalised for Slow Over-Rate Against Chennai Super Kings
In a controversial turn of events at the TATA Indian Premier League 2026, Shreyas Iyer and the entire Punjab Kings squad were penalised for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during their match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk.
Code of Conduct Breach
The IPL Governing Council confirmed that PBKS had maintained a slow over-rate for the second consecutive match. Iyer, who was previously penalised for a similar offence against Gujarat Titans, received the strictest fine this time.
“As this was his team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the IPL stated.
Match Highlights: PBKS Defeats CSK
Despite the penalties, Punjab Kings delivered a strong performance on the field, defeating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets to secure their second consecutive win of the season.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer played a pivotal role in the chase, scoring a rapid 50 off 29 balls, guiding PBKS to 210 for 5 in just 18.4 overs. CSK, batting first, posted 209 for 5, with young batter Ayush Mhatre top-scoring with a 73-ball 43. Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed 28 off 22 balls, forming a crucial 96-run second-wicket partnership with Mhatre.
PBKS’ innings also saw contributions from Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 32 off 12 balls, and Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 45 off 27 deliveries, ensuring a successful chase in dominant fashion.
Looking Ahead
While PBKS celebrates their back-to-back wins, the fines and reprimands serve as a reminder of the IPL’s strict regulations regarding on-field conduct. With the season in full swing, teams will now be more cautious to maintain over-rates to avoid further penalties.
The incident also highlights Iyer’s crucial role in PBKS’ victories while balancing responsibilities as captain, a challenge that the team will need to navigate as they aim for a strong IPL 2026 campaign.
