Varun Dhawan Shares Daughter Lara’s Struggle with Hip Condition, Highlights Importance of Early Treatment
Actor Varun Dhawan recently opened up about his daughter Lara Dhawan being diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a condition that affected her ability to walk and run normally. Varun and his wife Natasha Dalal welcomed Lara on June 3, 2024.
In a candid discussion on the podcast Be A Man, Yaar!, Varun explained that Lara was diagnosed with DDH around the age of one and a half. “My daughter was diagnosed with DDH, where the hip slips out of the socket. One leg becomes shorter than the other, which causes an uneven limp while walking. You can’t walk or run properly,” he said, highlighting the challenges she faced before treatment.
Varun stressed the importance of early intervention to prevent long-term complications like arthritis. “Early treatment is crucial to prevent arthritis and other issues. In the West, this condition is treated very well from birth. In India, such advanced treatment isn’t available everywhere yet, but there are many excellent doctors here who take care of it,” he noted.
Fortunately, Lara did not require surgery; a single procedure was enough to reposition her hip. However, recovery involved wearing a spica cast for 2.5 months, which was a challenging period for the toddler. “She was put under anaesthesia, woke up in the cast, and now the cast is removed. I actually want to write a book about this experience,” Varun shared, reflecting on how emotionally taxing the journey was for the family.
Varun’s openness about Lara’s condition brings attention to DDH, a condition that often goes undiagnosed in toddlers, and underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. His story also highlights the resilience of young children and the support families provide through such medical challenges.
