Hardik Pandya Urged to Step Aside as Mumbai Indians Captain Ahead of IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians (MI) captaincy saga continues to make headlines as Kris Srikkanth publicly suggested that Hardik Pandya should consider handing over the leadership baton to Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Hardik rejoined MI in 2024 in a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, whom he had led to the title in their inaugural 2022 season. Despite his credentials, the team’s leadership has been under scrutiny following a bottom-table finish in 2024 and a playoff exit in 2025. The franchise had retained Hardik as captain, sparking speculation about a possible rift with former skipper Rohit Sharma and leaving fans questioning the optimal leadership structure.

Srikkanth’s Perspective

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth highlighted the unusual dynamics within MI, pointing out that two T20 World Cup-winning captains Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav are currently playing under Hardik. “It’s a funny situation. Hardik Pandya is a good captain. But yes, they have two T20 World Cup-winning captains playing under him now. It’s some internal policy within their setup that they have to sort out,” he said.

Srikkanth suggested a voluntary handover by Hardik as a potential solution. “It’s a strange situation, as Hardik played under Rohit and Surya to help India win the World Cup. Otherwise, Hardik should himself say no to captaincy and allow Surya to lead. If Hardik himself says this to the management, things will get resolved. He should say, ‘Let Surya lead and I’ll support.’ That’s one way of solving it,” he explained.

Context Ahead of IPL 2026

MI, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, last lifted the trophy in 2020 under Rohit Sharma. Despite assembling one of the strongest squads on paper, the team has struggled to reclaim the title in recent seasons. Hardik’s return and subsequent leadership have been a mix of highs and lows: from playoff appearances to questions over captaincy effectiveness.

With the IPL 2026 campaign just days away, the debate over leadership adds another layer of intrigue. A decision on whether Hardik continues as skipper or passes the role to Suryakumar could influence team morale and the franchise’s chances of ending its trophy drought.

As Srikkanth emphasized, communication among the franchise, Hardik, Rohit, and Surya will be key to resolving the leadership situation and setting a clear roadmap for MI’s future in the IPL.
