Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Release in Limbo Amid Censor Board and Election Commission Delays

Chennai, March 19: Actor-politician Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan, billed as his farewell project before entering politics with his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, remains in limbo. The release, originally scheduled for January 9, has been delayed multiple times due to certification issues and political sensitivities.

Censor Board Refers Film to Election Commission

Sources from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told NDTV that Jana Nayagan has been referred to the Election Commission for re-examination because of certain political references in the film. With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in effect since March 15 ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections starting April 23, the final decision on the film’s certification now rests with the Election Commission. Votes are scheduled to be counted on May 4.

When contacted, officials at the Election Commission stated that they have not yet received any communication from the CBFC regarding the certification process for the film.

Release Dates Postponed

After missing the January 9 release, the makers had hoped to bring the film to theatres in February, but that did not materialize. More recently, Canada-based York Cinemas announced that the film is unlikely to release before April 30, invalidating all advance bookings in the process.

Vijay Voices Frustration

After weeks of silence, Vijay indirectly expressed frustration over the delays, suggesting that the BJP-led central government is playing a “blame game” regarding the certification of his farewell film.

Star-Studded Cast and Production

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features Vijay in the lead, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. The film has been widely anticipated both for its cinematic appeal and as a cultural marker of Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics.

Uncertain Future

With the Tamil Nadu elections approaching and the Election Commission yet to review the CBFC’s referral, the release date of Jana Nayagan remains uncertain. Fans and cinema chains have been advised to stay updated through official announcements regarding screening schedules and ticket availability.
