Prakash Jha Confirms Raajneeti Sequel; Fans Hope for Ranbir Kapoor–Katrina Kaif Reunion

Filmmaker Prakash Jha has confirmed that a sequel to his acclaimed 2010 political drama Raajneeti is currently in the works. The announcement has sparked excitement among fans, particularly those hoping to see the film’s original stars, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, reunite on screen.

Jha, known for his powerful socio-political dramas, revealed in a recent interview that he is actively working on the script for the sequel. “I’m actively working on it,” the National Award-winning filmmaker said, confirming that plans for the follow-up are moving forward.

The original Raajneeti was widely appreciated for its gripping narrative and strong performances. The film was often described as a contemporary take on the epic Mahabharata, weaving themes of power, ambition and political rivalry into a modern political drama. Apart from Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film featured an impressive ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal and Sarah Thompson in key roles.

Over the years, Jha has built a reputation for directing films that explore social and political themes. His notable works include Hip Hip Hurray, Damul, Mrityudand, Gangaajal and Apaharan. In recent years, he has been busy working on the web series Aashram starring Bobby Deol.

Reports about a sequel to Raajneeti first surfaced last year when Jha spoke about the possibility while marking the film’s 15th anniversary. At the time, he said that politics is a continuous journey and hinted that there had always been plans for a second installment, though casting and production details were not finalised.

Speaking about Ranbir Kapoor’s reflections on his performance in the original film, Jha said that it is natural for actors to revisit their past work critically. The filmmaker praised Ranbir’s ability to self-evaluate, adding that the actor delivered a strong performance while acknowledging that artists often feel they could do better when looking back at their earlier projects.

While the director has not revealed whether the original cast will return, fans are already speculating about a possible reunion between Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. If that happens, the sequel could also mark Katrina’s return to the big screen after her 2024 film Merry Christmas.

The actor has largely stayed away from the spotlight in recent months and is focusing on motherhood after welcoming her son, Vihaan Kaushal, with husband Vicky Kaushal last November.

Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor is currently busy with several major projects. He will be seen in Love & War directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The actor is also set to appear in Ramayana directed by Nitesh Tiwari, with the first part scheduled for release on Diwali 2026 and the second part expected on Diwali 2027.

As anticipation builds around the sequel to Raajneeti, fans are eager to see how Prakash Jha will revisit the world of power, politics and complex relationships that made the original film such a memorable cinematic experience.
