Inside Dhurandhar: The Revenge: How Casting Risks, Rejections & Big Bets Paid Off
Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge has taken the box office by storm since its release on March 19, emerging as one of the biggest theatrical successes of the year. Led by Ranveer Singh, the high-octane spy thriller continues to dominate globally, but fresh revelations about its casting journey have now added another layer of intrigue to its success story.
A Mammoth Casting Challenge
In a recent conversation, casting director Mukesh Chhabra opened up about the sheer scale of the film. Recalling his first reaction to the script, he revealed that he sat through a four-hour narration that left him stunned. The complexity and ambition of the story were evident from the start.
The film demanded an enormous ensemble, with nearly 400 characters across its narrative. To tackle this, Chhabra assembled a team of six and spent close to two years researching and casting. Dhar reportedly gave him complete creative freedom, encouraging him to “think big” and bring fresh, surprising faces to the screen.
Ranveer Singh: The Only Choice
Despite the extensive casting process, one decision was always clear—Ranveer Singh would play the lead role of Hamza. According to Chhabra, there was never any second option. Singh immediately came on board, aligning perfectly with the vision of the film and reportedly waiting for a project of this scale.
Rehman Dakait: The Role That Actors Regret Refusing
One of the most striking revelations involves the antagonist, Rehman Dakait, ultimately portrayed by Akshaye Khanna.
Chhabra disclosed that 2–3 actors had initially turned down the role, citing concerns about the film being an ensemble and largely centered around Ranveer Singh’s character. Without naming them, he hinted that their reasoning now seems misplaced given the film’s massive success.
Today, with Khanna’s performance widely appreciated, those decisions are believed to be ones the actors regret.
The Search for Yalina Jamali
Another major casting effort went into finding the perfect Yalina Jamali, eventually played by Sara Arjun. Chhabra and Dhar were keen on casting a completely fresh face to maintain authenticity and surprise.
The process was exhaustive—over 1,000 auditions were conducted before Arjun was finalized, underscoring the film’s commitment to detail and character integrity.
A Star-Studded Ensemble & Record-Breaking Success
Beyond its leads, the film boasts a powerful supporting cast including Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Rakesh Bedi, and Danish Pandor.
With its massive scale, meticulous casting, and strong audience reception, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has already crossed ₹1500 crore worldwide. The film stands as a testament to bold creative decisions—proving that even rejected roles can become iconic in the right hands.
