Afghan Cricketers Condemn Deadly Kabul Airstrike, Call for Justice

A wave of anger and grief has swept through Afghanistan’s cricket fraternity following a devastating airstrike in Kabul that reportedly killed around 400 people and injured over 250, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the country’s recent history.

Leading the outrage was Afghan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq, who expressed his anguish in a strongly worded reaction. “Hard to find any difference between Israel and Pakistani regime period,” he wrote on Facebook, drawing a sharp comparison that quickly gained traction among fans and the wider public.

Star all-rounder Rashid Khan also voiced deep concern over the reported civilian casualties. “I am deeply saddened by the latest reports of civilian casualties as a result of Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul. Targeting civilian homes, educational facilities or medical infrastructure is a war crime,” he stated. Rashid further condemned what he described as the “sheer disregard for human lives,” especially during the holy month of Ramadan, calling it “sickening.” He urged the United Nations and global human rights organizations to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable. “I stand with my Afghan people… We shall heal, and we will rise as a nation,” he added.

Former captain Mohammad Nabi shared an emotional message, highlighting the human cost of the tragedy. “Tonight in Kabul, hope was extinguished at a hospital. Mothers waited at the gates, calling their sons’ names,” he wrote, painting a heartbreaking picture of the aftermath.

T20I captain Ibrahim Zadran echoed similar sentiments. “Tonight I heard a massive explosion… Kabul is in pain. We pray for justice,” he said, reflecting the shock and sorrow felt across the nation.

According to officials, the strike reportedly targeted the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, a major 2,000-bed facility in Kabul, leaving large sections of the complex destroyed. Rescue teams are still working through the debris in search of survivors, as the scale of destruction continues to emerge.

The incident has further escalated already strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban administration, with both sides exchanging accusations over security concerns. As the humanitarian toll rises, voices from the cricketing world continue to amplify calls for accountability, justice, and international intervention.
