Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has showered praise on director Aditya Dhar after watching his spy thriller Dhurandhar, calling the filmmaker a game-changer who has transformed the way stories are presented on screen. However, Varma also suggested that Dhar’s rising success has sparked jealousy within the film industry, with many closely watching for any misstep from him or his wife, actor Yami Gautam.

Ram Gopal Varma praises Aditya Dhar’s filmmaking

In a conversation with Rediff, Ram Gopal Varma spoke at length about Aditya Dhar’s filmmaking style and technical approach. According to Varma, Dhar’s work has significantly altered the “grammar” of storytelling in Indian cinema.

“You have to understand what Aditya Dhar has done to the movie business,” Varma said. “He has changed the entire grammar of storytelling on screen. Our movies will never be the same again, and I am talking about all the languages, not only Hindi.”

Varma explained that Dhar’s approach has pushed filmmakers across industries to rethink how they create large-scale action films.

Impact beyond Hindi cinema

The director further noted that the influence of Dhar’s style is already visible in other film industries, including Telugu cinema. According to Varma, several upcoming big-budget action films are reportedly undergoing extensive reshoots as filmmakers try to match the scale and technical quality seen in Dhar’s work.

“In Telugu, many of the forthcoming big-budget action films are undergoing massive reshooting. Which means huge budgetary liabilities,” Varma said. “So, of course, they hate him. He has forced them to get out of their comfort zones, and that costs a helluva lot of money.”

A warning about industry pressure

Varma also spoke about Aditya Dhar’s wife, actor Yami Gautam, who has been receiving praise for her performance in the courtroom drama Haq. He suggested that the couple’s growing prominence has placed them under intense scrutiny within the industry.

“Aditya Dhar and Yami Gautam will have to move forward with extra caution,” Varma said. “The film industry is waiting for them to fumble and fall.”

Despite the competitive atmosphere, Varma’s comments underline the impact Aditya Dhar has had on contemporary filmmaking and the high expectations surrounding both him and Yami Gautam as their careers continue to rise.
