Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently opened up about her journey from Bollywood to Hollywood and the mindset that led her to step away from the Hindi film industry at the height of her success. Speaking on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the actor shared personal insights about fame, ambition, representation, and the challenges she faced while building an international career.

From Miss World to Bollywood Star

Priyanka’s entry into the entertainment industry began in 2000, when she won the prestigious Miss World 2000 title at the age of 18. The victory instantly brought her global recognition and opened the doors to the Indian film industry.

She soon made her acting debut and went on to become one of Bollywood’s most successful and versatile performers. Over the years, she delivered several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as Fashion, Barfi!, and Bajirao Mastani.

Reflecting on her early years, Priyanka admitted that she initially viewed the profession differently.

“My 18-year-old self wanted that for myself. My relationship with the job was very naive because I thought it was about fame,” she said.

However, after working on dozens of projects and gaining experience in the industry, she realised that fame alone cannot define an actor’s career.

“Only after I started working did I realise that fame is just a byproduct of the job—it isn’t the job itself.”

Today, Priyanka has appeared in nearly 70 films across Bollywood and Hollywood.

Feeling Creatively Limited

Despite enjoying immense success in India, Priyanka revealed that she eventually began feeling creatively restricted.

“When I was working in India, I started feeling a little limited. I like using that word because I wanted to see what else was out there.”

Her curiosity pushed her to explore global opportunities and challenge herself in a new environment. According to the actor, she wanted to understand how the international entertainment industry worked and whether Indian talent could make a larger impact on the global stage.

Lack of Indian Representation in Hollywood

Another major factor behind Priyanka’s move was the lack of representation of Indian actors in Western entertainment.

She said that while growing up and watching American pop culture, she rarely saw Indian faces on mainstream international platforms. Among the few she remembered seeing were Mindy Kaling and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

This sparked her curiosity.

“There were very few Indian female or even male actors working in Hollywood. I wanted to understand why we didn’t have that kind of representation.”

Her ambition was not just to work internationally but also to help create space for more South Asian actors in global storytelling.

Breaking Into Hollywood

Priyanka’s international breakthrough came when she landed the lead role in the American television series Quantico. The show premiered in 2015 and made her the first South Asian actor to headline an American network drama series.

Her performance as FBI agent Alex Parrish received widespread attention and helped her gain recognition in the United States.

Following the success of Quantico, she appeared in Hollywood projects including Baywatch alongside Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

She later expanded her international portfolio with projects like The Matrix Resurrections and Citadel, further establishing herself as a global entertainer.

Addressing Rumours About Her Exit from Bollywood

Over the years, many rumours circulated suggesting that Priyanka’s departure from Bollywood was due to industry conflicts or personal struggles.

During the podcast conversation, she acknowledged that challenges are a natural part of any career.

“Nothing is an easy ride. We all have battles we deal with.”

However, she emphasised that she prefers not to stay stuck in difficult situations.

“I’m just someone who doesn’t like staying in the sh** because then you get used to the smell.”

Her philosophy has always been about growth and forward movement.

The Power of “Pivoting”

Priyanka described “pivoting” as one of the most important principles that has guided her career.

According to her, life inevitably brings setbacks, but the key is to adapt and move forward.

“When life gets tough, we have the ability to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, take a moment to grieve and feel the pain—and then pivot.”

She added that she has applied this approach many times throughout her professional journey.

A Truly Global Career

Today, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is considered one of the most successful Indian actors on the global stage. Apart from acting, she has also ventured into production, business, and philanthropy.

Her marriage to singer and actor Nick Jonas further strengthened her global celebrity status, making the couple one of the most talked-about international power pairs.

From winning Miss World to breaking barriers in Hollywood, Priyanka’s journey reflects determination, resilience, and a willingness to step outside her comfort zone.

Her story continues to inspire aspiring artists who dream of making their mark beyond geographical and cultural boundaries.
