Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Receives Green Light to Host IPL 2026 Matches
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has officially received approval from the Karnataka government to host Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The decision follows a detailed review of safety and infrastructure measures by an expert committee in consultation with government officials.
Vinay Mruthyunjaya, KSCA’s official spokesperson, confirmed the approval, stating, “We are extremely happy to inform you that the government has permitted us to play the IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium. All five matches proposed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be held here, and playoffs and finals are also likely to take place at the stadium.”
Phase 1 Safety Works Completed
The formal approval comes after the Expert Committee’s inspection on March 13, which evaluated the stadium’s infrastructure and safety arrangements under Phase 1 of KSCA’s improvement plan. The committee’s assessment covered crowd management, emergency preparedness, and other key safety measures.
“All the Phase 1 works have been completed to the satisfaction of the Expert Committee,” Mruthyunjaya said. The committee also suggested additional safety protocols to be implemented during match days to ensure a secure environment for all spectators.
Public Awareness and Safety Measures
KSCA Vice President Sujith Somasundar highlighted that the expert committee emphasized public awareness. “We plan to run a strong social media campaign to inform the public about all safety measures, including exit points, ambulance services, and other emergency arrangements,” he said.
With the completion of all safety measures, the stadium has been cleared to host matches at its full capacity of 33,000 spectators.
Collaborative Efforts with RCB
Following the clearance, KSCA will hand over the stadium to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as per the existing stadium agreement. The association will also assist the franchise in maintaining safety standards during matches.
Key Infrastructure Upgrades
Phase 1 improvements included recommendations from multiple government departments:
- Police Department: Widening gates, increasing exit points, creating holding areas, and managing crowd flow more efficiently.
- Public Works Department (PWD), Fire & Emergency Services, and Medical & Family Welfare Department: Measures for fire safety, medical emergency preparedness, and overall crowd safety.
- Strategic crowd management adjustments, such as reducing spectators entering via Queen’s Road and increasing entry from Cubbon Road, to improve flow and safety.
With all safety measures in place, Bengaluru is set to welcome IPL fans once again to the historic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, promising a secure and exciting cricketing experience in IPL 2026.
