Deepika Padukone Raises Alarm Over Poor Air Quality in Mumbai, Urges Authorities to Take Action
A thick layer of smog covered several parts of Mumbai on Thursday morning, significantly reducing visibility and raising serious concerns about the city’s deteriorating air quality. Among those voicing alarm was Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone, who urged authorities to take immediate action to address the situation.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Deepika shared a screenshot of the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) map, which showed high pollution levels across many areas of the Mumbai metropolitan region. Expressing her concern, the actor wrote:

“The citizens of this city and its children are choking! How is this okay!?”
She also tagged civic authorities including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and its health department, calling for urgent measures to protect residents from the hazardous air conditions.
According to the latest data, Mumbai’s AQI has been recorded at 159, placing it in the ‘unhealthy’ category. Air quality at this level can pose health risks, particularly for children, elderly individuals, and people with respiratory conditions.
Deepika is not the only celebrity to highlight the issue. Actors Saiyami Kher and Richa Chadha have also spoken about the worsening air quality in the city.
Saiyami, who is known for her fitness routines and long-distance running, shared an emotional message on Instagram describing how the pollution has affected her daily runs.

“I started running a decade ago. Every morning I’d find myself on Carter Road chasing the ocean breeze. That wind made me fall in love with this city and running. I want to feel it again,” she wrote.
She added that she now wears a mask before stepping out to run, saying the experience reminds her of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It took me back to the pandemic. Except there’s no virus in the air endangering our life. The air itself could kill us,” Saiyami wrote.
The rising pollution levels in Mumbai have sparked concern among residents and public figures alike, prompting renewed calls for stronger environmental policies and stricter pollution control measures. With celebrities using their platforms to highlight the issue, the hope is that authorities will take swift action to improve air quality and safeguard public health in the city.
