Shibayama was a towering figure in the world of anime, best known for shaping the beloved Doraemon franchise into a cultural phenomenon over more than two decades. Born in Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1941, he began his animation career in 1963 and quickly established himself as a creative force behind many classic series.

His influence extended beyond his own projects; many animators have cited his storytelling and character work as a source of inspiration.

Shibayama’s contributions were recognised formally in 2012 when he received the Agency for Cultural Affairs Award, one of Japan’s most respected honours in the field of arts and culture.

Fans around the world have taken to social media to mourn his passing, remembering him for the warmth, imagination and emotional depth he brought to some of anime’s most enduring classics.
