Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya is reportedly preparing to leave the franchise after a mentally exhausting and disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. According to reports, the all-rounder informed the Mumbai Indians management during the season itself that he no longer wished to continue with the team after facing constant pressure, criticism and internal challenges over the past two years.

The report claims that Hardik Pandya was mentally stressed, emotionally drained and physically exhausted following Mumbai Indians’ poor performance this season. The five-time IPL champions failed to make a serious impact in the tournament, and their playoff hopes ended well before the league stage concluded.

Sources close to the development revealed that once Mumbai Indians were officially knocked out of playoff contention, discussions between Hardik and the franchise management intensified, leading to a mutual understanding that both sides could part ways before the next season.

Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians in 2024 after leading Gujarat Titans successfully in previous seasons. His comeback, however, immediately sparked controversy because he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, a decision that upset a large section of MI fans.

Since then, Hardik faced continuous trolling and booing from crowds during matches. Even though he tried to stay calm publicly and described the journey as “difficult but entertaining,” reports suggest the constant criticism deeply affected him.

According to insiders, one of the biggest reasons behind Hardik’s frustration was the atmosphere inside the dressing room. The report states that not every senior player was fully aligned with the new leadership, creating internal tension during crucial moments of the season.

The source further claimed that while players demanded complete commitment from Hardik during his time representing India, he did not always receive the same support when leading the IPL franchise.

The difficult phase reportedly impacted Hardik emotionally, especially because he had once enjoyed tremendous success and strong relationships within the Mumbai Indians setup before leaving the franchise in 2021.

Adding to the pressure, Hardik was also dealing with fitness concerns and a back injury during the season. Managing injuries alongside captaincy responsibilities and public criticism reportedly pushed him to the point of mental exhaustion.

At 32, Hardik Pandya still remains one of India’s most important white-ball cricketers and among the biggest match-winners in T20 cricket. However, reports indicate that he now wants a fresh environment and a reset in his IPL career.

It is still unclear whether Hardik will enter the IPL auction pool or seek a direct trade to another franchise. Some reports have already linked him with Chennai Super Kings as a possible destination if a trade takes place before IPL 2027.

Fans are now divided over the situation. While many believe Hardik deserves support after handling immense pressure over the last two seasons, others feel the leadership transition from Rohit Sharma was never accepted emotionally by Mumbai Indians supporters.

If Hardik officially leaves the franchise, it could mark the end of one of the most dramatic chapters in recent IPL history. From returning as captain amid controversy to facing boos from his own fans and now reportedly deciding to walk away, the journey has been filled with pressure, emotions and constant scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are also expected to face major changes ahead of next season as the franchise looks to rebuild after another disappointing campaign.
