Is Diljit Dosanjh the New Face of Punjab Politics? His Clear Answer: “Never.”
Actor–musician Diljit Dosanjh has become one of the most visible faces of Punjab culture, travelling the world singing about his state, history, and people. But when a group of civil‑society leaders and retired officers publicly asked him to step into politics as Punjab’s “new political face,” he shut the idea down with one simple line: “Kadey v nhi. Mera kam entertainment karna.” (Never. My job is to entertain.)
Why People Wanted Him in Politics
The idea that Diljit could be a “new face” for Punjab politics came from a public appeal published by the Punjabi Tribune. In the article titled “Can Diljit Dosanjh be the new political face of Punjab?” the newspaper highlighted how a group of activists—including retired IAS officers, defence personnel, and people from different walks of life—had urged him to join politics.
Their argument was simple: he has a massive fan following across Punjabis in India and abroad, often openly talks about Punjab’s issues, and has stayed away from traditional power games. For them, he looked like a fresh, honest leader who could possibly change the tone of state politics.
Diljit’s Firm, Polite Reply
Reacting to the post on social media, Diljit replied:
“Kadey v Nhi..Mera Kam Entertainment Karna. Am Very Happy in My Field. Thank You So Much.”
In plain words, he made it clear that he has no plans to switch from films and music to political office. He wants to stay in entertainment, where he feels “very happy,” and let politicians handle the governance part. His fans largely backed him, with many commenting that politics would be a “dirty space” and that he should not compromise his creative identity.

A Star Who Keeps Talking About Punjab
Even though he’s staying out of politics, Diljit’s work is deeply rooted in Punjab’s identity. He recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he spoke about Indian history with Canada—especially the time when Indians were not allowed to enter the country.
He referenced the 1914 Komagata Maru incident, pointing out that a stadium in Vancouver where he later performed is just two kilometres from where that historic ship arrived. “55,000 people in the stadium now, two kilometres away from the place where they didn’t allow us to come. And now, here we are,” he said, turning a personal show into a moment of collective pride for Punjabis and the Indian diaspora.
Taking a Stand on Khalistan Issue at Concerts
Diljit has also been in the news for speaking out directly against pro‑Khalistani protesters at his international shows. At one of his Aura 2026 concerts in Canada, supporters raised separatist flags and tried to create a ruckus, even as he continued to call himself a proud Punjabi Indian.
Standing on stage, he reportedly said, “Jinne jhande dikhane dilkhai challo” (“If you still want to wave those flags, go ahead”)—but also made it clear he would not tolerate disturbance at his venue and that anyone causing trouble would be removed. He has said he is being criticised from both sides—some in India call him “Khalistani,” while some groups abroad call him “India‑wala”—but he insists he is just following his own path and standing for Punjab as part of India.
What’s Next on the Screen
While politics is off his table, Diljit remains busy in films and music. He starred in the Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 (2025) and the Hindi‑Punjabi war film Border 2, which released this year.
He also has the upcoming Imtiaz Ali film Main Vaapas Aaunga in the pipeline, co‑starring Vedang Raina, Sharvari Wagh, and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. Alongside that, he’s touring the world with his Aura Tour, promoting songs from his 2025 album and connecting with audiences who treat his concerts almost like emotional homecoming events.
So, Is He Punjab’s New Political Face?
The short answer, as per Diljit himself, is no. He may wear the pride of Punjab on his chest and speak about its history and struggles wherever he goes, but he has made it clear that he wants to do that as an entertainer, not an MLA or minister.
Whether Punjab ever finds a political leader who can match his mass appeal remains to be seen. But for now, Diljit Dosanjh is choosing to stay on stage, on screen, and in songs—keeping Punjab alive in people’s hearts, just not in political party offices.
