Vinesh Phogat Breaks Silence, Confirms She Is One of Six Complainants in WFI Sexual Harassment Case

Three-time Olympian and wrestler-turned-legislator Vinesh Phogat has publicly confirmed that she is one of the six women who filed a complaint in the ongoing sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

In a video statement shared on May 3, 2026, on her official social media handle, Phogat broke her earlier anonymity and spoke openly about her decision to come forward, citing continued pressure and what she described as a lack of accountability within Indian wrestling administration.

“I am one of the six victims”: Phogat

In her statement, Phogat said clearly: “I am one of the six victims who filed a complaint.” She added that remaining silent any longer was not an option given the ongoing circumstances and concerns around athlete safety.

She alleged that returning to certain wrestling hubs, including Gonda, felt unsafe and described the environment as being under the “stranglehold” of the accused.

Criticism of authorities and Sports Ministry

Phogat also criticised the role of authorities, including the Sports Ministry, for what she termed a “silent spectator” approach. She said that despite repeated concerns raised by athletes, meaningful action and accountability have been lacking.

Her remarks highlight ongoing tensions surrounding the handling of complaints within Indian sports administration and the broader debate over athlete protection systems.

“Fight is about dignity, not just sport”

The Olympian emphasised that her struggle now goes beyond wrestling and personal grievance. She said the issue represents a larger fight for dignity, justice, and safety for women athletes across India.

According to Phogat, many others who have faced similar situations have remained unheard, and she hopes her decision to speak publicly will encourage more transparency and courage.

A case that reshaped Indian sports discourse

The case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been one of the most closely followed controversies in Indian sports in recent years, leading to protests by prominent wrestlers and calls for reforms in sports governance.

Phogat’s latest statement is expected to further intensify discussions around athlete safety, institutional accountability, and reforms within the wrestling ecosystem.

Authorities have not yet issued a fresh response following her video statement.
