Tamil Nadu Elections 2026: TVK’s Strong Debut Reshapes Contest as Vijay Leads Surge in Early Trends
The counting process in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 has thrown up one of the biggest political surprises in recent years, with actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as a dominant force in early trends.
According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission of India, TVK is leading in 110 constituencies, followed by AIADMK with 59 seats and DMK with 48 seats. The unexpected performance of the new entrant has triggered widespread political discussion across the state.
Security has been stepped up around Vijay’s residence in Neelangarai and the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur, as large crowds of supporters gathered outside to celebrate the early leads. Party spokesperson Felix Gerald has expressed confidence that TVK is on track to form the government with a clear majority if current trends continue.
High-voltage battle across key constituencies
Several high-profile constituencies have become focal points in the unfolding election drama, with heavyweight leaders and debut candidates locked in tight contests.
Kolathur: Shock lead against the CM’s bastion
Kolathur, the constituency of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, has delivered one of the biggest surprises of the day. TVK candidate VS Babu is currently leading by a narrow margin, putting the DMK stronghold under unexpected pressure.
Political observers say this development, if sustained, could mark one of the most significant symbolic setbacks for the ruling party in its traditional base.
Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni: DMK retains edge
In Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, represented by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the DMK has managed to hold its ground. TVK’s D Selvam has put up a competitive fight but trails by around 1,365 votes, indicating a closely watched contest that could still tighten as counting progresses.
Edappadi: AIADMK stronghold intact
The Edappadi constituency continues to remain firmly with Edappadi K. Palaniswami of AIADMK. Known for his consistent wins since 2011, Palaniswami is currently maintaining a comfortable lead, reinforcing the party’s strong rural base in the region.
Perambur: Vijay’s electoral debut dominates headlines
Perambur has become one of the most talked-about seats, as Vijay himself entered electoral politics from here. He is currently leading by a significant margin against DMK’s R.D. Sekar and other candidates.
This performance has been widely seen as a strong endorsement of his political entry, with supporters calling it a “historic debut” for TVK in electoral politics.
Katpadi: Close fight continues
Katpadi, a long-standing DMK bastion held by veteran leader Durai Murugan, is witnessing a tight contest. AIADMK’s V. Ramu is currently ahead, while TVK’s M. Sudhakar remains in contention, making it one of the most closely watched constituencies of the day.
TVK’s emergence changes political equations
The early surge of TVK has significantly altered the expected dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by DMK and AIADMK. Analysts say the strong showing reflects a shift in voter sentiment, particularly among younger demographics and urban constituencies.
With counting still underway, the final outcome remains uncertain. However, TVK’s performance in its debut election has already ensured that it has become a major political force in the state’s evolving landscape.
