Jasprit Bumrah Struggles in IPL 2026 as Mumbai Indians Face Tough Season; Kieron Pollard Admits “Not Up to the Mark”

Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 campaign has hit a rough patch, and one of the biggest talking points has been the unusual dip in form of their spearhead bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Known for his pinpoint accuracy and match-winning spells, Bumrah has endured one of the most challenging phases of his IPL career so far this season.

Underwhelming numbers for a world-class bowler

After eight matches in IPL 2026, Bumrah has managed just 2 wickets from 180 deliveries, with a strike rate of 90. More concerning for Mumbai Indians is his economy rate, which has risen to 8.80—his first time crossing the eight-run mark since 2015.

While such numbers may be acceptable for many bowlers in the modern T20 format, they stand in sharp contrast to Bumrah’s usual standards, where he has long been regarded as one of the most reliable death-over specialists in world cricket.

Mumbai Indians feel the impact

Mumbai Indians’ overall performance has mirrored Bumrah’s dip in form. The franchise has struggled for consistency this season, losing six of their first eight matches. Traditionally, Bumrah’s control with the ball has been central to MI’s success, but this year both player and team have found it difficult to maintain momentum.

Pollard’s honest assessment

Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard addressed Bumrah’s form in a candid post-match press conference following the defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Pollard acknowledged that Bumrah has “not been up to the mark” but urged perspective, highlighting the bowler’s long-standing contribution to both Mumbai Indians and India.

He said that even great players go through lean phases and emphasized that Bumrah remains a key figure in the squad despite recent struggles.

MI still not giving up

Pollard also reflected on Mumbai Indians’ broader issues, admitting that the team has not been able to produce a “complete game of cricket” this season. However, he stressed that the dressing room remains motivated and is still fighting to turn things around.

“We have not accepted defeat,” Pollard said, pointing out that Mumbai Indians are still mathematically in contention with several matches remaining in the league stage.

Road ahead

With six matches still left in the season, Mumbai Indians have a chance to recover and push for a strong finish if they can find consistency across all departments. Much will depend on whether Bumrah can rediscover his rhythm and return to his match-winning form.

For now, though, IPL 2026 remains a rare testing phase for one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers—and a season where Mumbai Indians are searching for answers.
