Why a “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi” Question to Manu Bhaker Sparked a Social Media Debate

A simple question linking two young sporting stars has unexpectedly triggered a social media storm. Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker was recently asked about teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during an event in Delhi, prompting a wider debate online about cross-sport comparisons and media framing.

The interaction took place on the sidelines of the National Rifle Association of India’s (NRAI) 75th anniversary celebrations, where Bhaker was asked to comment on Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise in cricket.

Responding to the question, Bhaker praised the young batter’s potential, saying talent has no age limit and success depends heavily on guidance and environment.

“I would say that if the mentorship is good, the company around him is good… then age is just a number. There is no age for talent,” she said, adding that proper mentorship could help him become “the next big star.”

Social Media Reaction and Backlash

The question itself, however, drew criticism from sections of social media and sports commentators who felt it overshadowed Bhaker’s own achievements.

Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has been widely celebrated as the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal and the first Indian athlete to win two medals in a single Olympic Games.

Former KKR team director Joy Bhattacharjya publicly reacted on X, calling the question unfair to Bhaker’s stature as an elite athlete. He argued that sports coverage often over-focuses on cricket while overlooking achievements in other disciplines.

Other users echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that athletes from non-cricket sports are rarely given equal attention or cross-sport comparisons in media interactions.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is in the Spotlight

Meanwhile, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to be one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket.

The 15-year-old batter has already made headlines for becoming the youngest player to cross 1,000 T20 runs and the first uncapped player to score two IPL centuries. In the current IPL season, he has scored 357 runs in eight innings at an average of 44.62 and a strike rate above 234, including a century and two fifties.

His breakout performances also include a strong showing in the U19 World Cup earlier this year, where he finished among the top run-scorers with 439 runs in seven matches, including a record 30 sixes in the tournament.

Larger Debate Over Media Framing

The incident has reignited discussion about how young athletes are covered in India, especially the tendency to draw comparisons across completely different sports.

While Bhaker’s response was widely appreciated for its balanced and encouraging tone, the episode has raised questions about whether such comparisons do more to generate headlines than to respect the achievements of athletes in their respective fields.

As both Bhaker and Sooryavanshi continue to rise in their respective sports, the conversation has shifted beyond a single question—towards how India frames its sporting heroes in the media spotlight.
