Rishabh Pant Faces Backlash Over Nicholas Pooran Super Over Call; Justin Langer Defends Bold Gamble Despite Historic Narine Clash

A dramatic Super Over finish in IPL 2026 between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has sparked intense debate, after LSG’s tactical decision to send Nicholas Pooran against Sunil Narine backfired almost instantly. The move, led by captain Rishabh Pant, has drawn sharp criticism from fans and analysts, while head coach Justin Langer has stepped in to defend the strategy.

Historic Matchup Ends in Familiar Fashion

The Super Over saw a rare and high-pressure decision from LSG: sending Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram to bat, with Pooran taking strike against KKR’s experienced spinner Sunil Narine.

However, the decision quickly unraveled as Pooran was dismissed on the very first ball, bowled by Narine.

What made the moment even more striking was the historical context—Pooran had previously struggled against Narine in the only maiden Super Over in T20 history during the 2014 Caribbean Premier League, where he failed to score and was eventually dismissed.

This time, history repeated itself in even more dramatic fashion.

Fans Question Rishabh Pant’s Tactical Call

Following the dismissal, social media erupted with criticism aimed at Rishabh Pant, with many questioning why Pooran was chosen despite his past record against Narine.

Cricket fans pointed out that Pooran has consistently struggled against the West Indian spinner, raising doubts over LSG’s decision-making in such a high-stakes moment.

Justin Langer Explains the Strategy

Responding to the backlash, LSG coach Justin Langer defended the move, stating that the team backed their most experienced T20 players despite recent form concerns.

“We knew Narine had bowled him before, but Nicholas has faced him more than anyone in world cricket,” Langer explained. “We felt he was still the best option. You back your best players in big moments.”

He further added that while Pooran is currently out of form, the team continues to believe in his ability.

“No one plays Sunil Narine better in terms of experience than Nicholas Pooran. It didn’t come off today, but that’s the nature of the game,” he said.

“One of the Best T20 Players” But Lacking Confidence

Langer also described Pooran as one of the most impactful T20 batters in world cricket over the past few years, while acknowledging that the player is currently struggling with confidence.

“He is one of the best T20 players in the world over the last few years. But confidence is a real thing—you can’t fake it. We’re working with him every day to bring it back,” Langer said.

LSG’s Struggles Continue

With only six matches remaining in the league stage and LSG placed 10th on the points table, the team’s playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. However, Langer remained optimistic, stating that the squad is focused on a strong finish.

“We’ve got seven days to reset. We’ll look at changes if needed, but we have to stay positive. There’s no point being here otherwise,” he added.

A Gamble That Backfired

The Super Over decision will likely remain a talking point throughout the season, as LSG’s bold gamble failed to deliver under pressure. For Rishabh Pant and his team, it now becomes a question of learning from the moment as they attempt to salvage their IPL 2026 campaign.
