Varun Dhawan Doesn’t Always Like Comparisons to Govinda and Salman Khan, Reveals David Dhawan
In a recent interview, filmmaker David Dhawan opened up about the long-standing comparisons between his son Varun Dhawan and Bollywood stars like Govinda and Salman Khan.
Ever since his Bollywood debut, Varun Dhawan has often been compared to Govinda and Salman Khan due to his energetic screen presence and mass appeal. However, David Dhawan revealed that Varun doesn’t always take these comparisons in a positive spirit.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, David said, “Varun likes Salman Khan, Govinda and also Akshay Kumar. Some of the scenes that I shoot look like it is a Salman Khan scene, but it is not like that.”
He further shared that Varun sometimes expresses his discomfort over such comparisons. “He doesn’t like it sometimes. He tells me, ‘Papa aap mujhse kya karate rehte ho (What are you making me do).’ I tell him that this is my cinema but you do it like yourself, people will say these things because both Govinda and Salman have been such successful actors with me. It is part of life. Good that he is being compared to good actors,” he added.
The comparisons between Varun and senior actors have often sparked discussions in Bollywood. Earlier, during the promotions of Aa Gaya Hero, Govinda himself had commented on Varun, saying, “Varun Dhawan can never be like me… How can Varun be like me? To become Govinda, he needs to be innocent, uneducated and a poor village boy. Varun is already a son of a director.”
Responding to Govinda’s statement, Varun had acknowledged the difference in their journeys, saying, “Woh kehte hai mujhme aur unme koi samantaye nahi hai. Yeh sahi hai. Kisi mein samantayein ho bhi nahi sakti.”
Interestingly, David Dhawan has had successful collaborations with both Salman Khan and Govinda over the years, delivering hit films like Judwaa, Biwi No.1, Partner, Coolie No. 1, and Hero No. 1.
On the work front, Varun Dhawan was recently seen in Border 2, which emerged as a commercial success. He is now gearing up for his next release Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, a romantic comedy directed by David Dhawan. The film also stars Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles.
