Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes story involving West Indies batting legend Chris Gayle, former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya, and Gayle’s dramatic entry into the tournament after going unsold in the IPL auction.

Speaking on a podcast, Lalit Modi recalled how Gayle, who went unsold in the IPL 2011 auction after previously representing Kolkata Knight Riders, reached out to him in a moment of uncertainty.
According to Modi, Gayle expressed concern about financial pressure at the time, reportedly mentioning that he had debts to clear and needed an opportunity to continue playing in the IPL.
Modi’s intervention and Mallya’s decision
Modi said he personally contacted several franchise owners before approaching Vijay Mallya, then owner of RCB, urging him to consider giving Gayle a chance.
Mallya reportedly agreed, with an opening in the squad created due to an injury replacement. Gayle was brought in as a replacement for Dirk Nannes, marking the beginning of one of the most dominant IPL careers in history.
