Mumbai Indians have been dealt a potential injury scare after veteran opener Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring issue during the IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The former captain had to retire hurt midway through his innings, visibly limping off the field, sparking immediate concern among fans and team management. The incident has raised doubts over his availability for Mumbai Indians’ upcoming fixture against Punjab Kings scheduled for April 16, leaving very little time for recovery.

Following the injury, Rohit Sharma also missed Mumbai Indians’ latest training session, further increasing uncertainty around his fitness. While his absence from practice has raised alarm, early medical reports have offered some relief.

According to initial assessments, scans have not confirmed any hamstring tear. Instead, the injury is believed to be a strain, though the results have been described as inconclusive. This has eased concerns slightly, particularly given Rohit’s importance to the side and his nearing 39th birthday.

However, Mumbai Indians now face a selection dilemma if their senior opener is ruled out. The team could consider bringing back Quinton de Kock or reshuffling the top order involving Ryan Rickelton. Any change at the top could also put additional pressure on the middle order, which has struggled for consistency this season.

MI have already been grappling with form issues, including inconsistent performances, middle-order instability, and a lack of finishing firepower. Key players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya have yet to deliver sustained impact, adding to the franchise’s concerns at a crucial stage of the tournament.

Meanwhile, there was also a brief injury worry involving Virat Kohli in the same match, as he left the field momentarily due to an ankle issue. However, reports suggest that his condition is not serious.

With the schedule tightening and playoffs pressure building, Mumbai Indians may opt to rest Rohit Sharma as a precaution, prioritizing long-term fitness over immediate availability. A final decision on his participation is expected closer to match day as medical updates continue to be monitored.
