NHRC Issues Notices Over ‘Sarke Chunar’ Song Row from KD: The Devil
The controversy surrounding the song “Sarke Chunar” from the upcoming film KD: The Devil has intensified, drawing the attention of top regulatory and rights bodies in India. Following public outrage over its allegedly “vulgar” lyrics and choreography, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has now stepped into the matter.
Social media users had earlier raised concerns about the song’s content, calling it “sexually suggestive” and inappropriate. The backlash soon escalated into formal complaints filed with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), prompting further scrutiny.
NHRC Intervention
On Tuesday, the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to multiple authorities, including the Central Board of Film Certification, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Google India.
The commission has asked these bodies to investigate the issue and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.
The bench, headed by NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo, noted that the allegations if proven could point to a violation of human rights. Acting under the provisions of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the commission has taken cognisance of the matter.
Ongoing Debate
The development has reignited the broader debate around censorship, artistic freedom, and social responsibility in the entertainment industry. While some argue that creative expression should not be curtailed, others believe that content crossing certain boundaries especially when widely accessible online should be regulated more strictly.
As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes are now on the concerned authorities and their forthcoming responses to the NHRC’s directive.
