Amit Jadhav Claims Saiyaara Copied His Short Film, Says “I Almost Died by Suicide”
The 2025 romantic drama Saiyaara, produced by Yash Raj Films, earned widespread praise for its music and emotional storyline when it released last year. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film stars Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda and follows the story of a struggling musician and a writer who help each other heal from their past traumas.
However, the film has now landed in the middle of a controversy after actor-singer Amit Jadhav alleged that the story bears striking similarities to his short film Khwabon.
Amit Jadhav says similarities were pointed out by friends
In a recent interview with HT City, Amit Jadhav claimed he only realised the similarities after the film’s release, when friends began contacting him.
“A week after Saiyaara’s release, my friends called me and said, ‘Tera toh story same tha.’ I was shocked,” he said.
Jadhav revealed that he tried reaching out to the film’s team but did not receive a response. According to him, he even visited the production office, but friends warned him that he might not be entertained.
Claim about earlier contact from YRF Talent
Jadhav also said that he had once received a message from YRF Talent on Instagram in 2022.
“I had actually received a direct message on Instagram from YRF Talent in 2022. They wanted to get in touch with me. I asked them which project they were reaching out to me for, but they didn’t answer,” he said.
At the time, he didn’t think much about the message as he had no prior connections with the production house and had not auditioned for any project.
Emotional toll of the controversy
The singer shared that the entire episode had a deep emotional impact on him. While he continued to work as a singer, the situation left him feeling discouraged.
“One day, I almost committed suicide. I was sloshed, my parents saw and that’s how I got saved,” he said. “I felt like the world didn’t want me to succeed.”
Jadhav added that he was not being called for auditions and felt his efforts in the industry were being overlooked.
Script was not formally registered
The actor admitted that while he had released the short film publicly, the script was never officially registered.
“I am a part of the Screenwriters Association, but I did not get the story registered in 2019 because it was a short film and already on a public platform as proof,” he explained.
He also said he sent emails to the production house asking for clarification about the similarities but did not receive a reply.
“I wrote that I had received a message from them in 2022 and that Saiyaara’s story is similar to mine. I asked for clarification, but there was no response,” he said.
What Amit Jadhav wants now
Despite the controversy, Jadhav said he is not seeking legal action but hopes for recognition.
“I should get some credit. Or I can be cast in some role in a project. That’s all I am seeking,” he said.
Apart from Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, Saiyaara also featured Alam Khan, Rajesh Kumar and Geeta Agarwal Sharma in key roles. The film was released on July 18, 2025, and became popular among audiences for its music and emotional narrative.
