Television actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee has shared her thoughts on Karwa Chauth, explaining why she believes the traditional festival should be a personal choice rather than a subject of criticism. Although the actor has never observed the fast herself, she revealed that she would love to celebrate it someday.

Taking to X, Devoleena wished a happy Karwa Chauth to everyone celebrating the festival. She also spoke about how different Indian cultures follow different traditions, while emphasising that people should be free to embrace the rituals that make them happy.

Devoleena Bhattacharjee Reveals Why She Has Never Observed Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is a traditional Hindu festival in which married women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The ritual is often associated with love, devotion and marital harmony.

Devoleena explained that Karwa Chauth is not traditionally observed in Bengali and Assamese cultures, which is why she has never kept the fast as a married woman.

Sharing her thoughts, she wrote, “I’ve never kept a Karwa Chauth fast because, in Bengali and Assamese cultures, it isn’t a tradition. We may not have every ritual, but we celebrate so many festivals with all our hearts. So why not Karwa Chauth?”

The actor also admitted that she is interested in observing the fast one day, but has concerns about going without water for an entire day.

“Honestly, I do feel like keeping it someday. But I’m scared I won’t be able to manage a whole day without water! I fast every Monday and sometimes on Ekadashi, but water fasting? That’s a different story!” she added.

‘Why Bring Feminism, Patriarchy and Judgment Into Someone Else’s Celebration?’

Devoleena also addressed the criticism that Karwa Chauth sometimes receives, particularly discussions around feminism and patriarchy. She said that for many couples, the festival is a meaningful way of expressing love and should not automatically be judged.

The actor pointed out that many women observe the fast happily, while some husbands also choose to fast alongside their wives.

“I genuinely feel that for many couples, this is a love language. I’ve seen women celebrate it happily, and today, so many husbands fast alongside their wives. So why bring feminism, patriarchy and judgment into someone else’s celebration?” she wrote.

She further explained that people who do not believe in the ritual are free not to celebrate it, but should respect those who choose to do so.

“As long as it’s a personal choice and nobody is forced into it, let people celebrate love the way they want to,” Devoleena added.

Her message centred on the importance of individual choice, suggesting that traditions should be embraced voluntarily rather than imposed on anyone.

Devoleena Says Husband Shanawaz Shaikh Asks Her About Karwa Chauth Every Year

Devoleena also shared a personal detail about her marriage to fitness trainer Shanawaz Shaikh. Although Shanawaz follows Islam and Devoleena comes from a Bengali Hindu background, she revealed that he asks her every year whether she plans to observe Karwa Chauth.

The actor said that her usual response is to postpone it until the following year. She explained that she is currently breastfeeding and hopes to consider keeping the fast once she is able to.

“I’m still breastfeeding, so hopefully next year!” she wrote.

Devoleena also highlighted how people often follow different fasting routines for their own health or lifestyle goals, yet question the idea of fasting for a partner.

“We do intermittent fasting, try keto and follow all kinds of diets for ourselves. But when it comes to fasting for a husband, suddenly everything becomes about patriarchy and feminism?” she asked.

She concluded by reiterating that love, traditions and celebrations are personal matters, and everyone should be allowed to make their own choices.

Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Shanawaz Shaikh’s Marriage

Devoleena Bhattacharjee married Shanawaz Shaikh in December 2022 in an intimate court wedding in Lonavala. The ceremony was attended by close friends and took place away from the usual grand wedding celebrations.

The couple welcomed their baby boy on December 18, 2024, and Devoleena has since been sharing glimpses of her journey as a mother.

Through her latest post, the actor has sparked a conversation about respecting personal beliefs and cultural differences. Her message is simple: whether someone chooses to observe Karwa Chauth or not, the decision should remain their own.
