Actor Radhika Apte has opened up about the challenges faced by women-led films in Bollywood, saying that uncertainty surrounding box-office performance makes it difficult for female actors to lead theatrical releases. According to the actor, many women are often compelled to be part of male-led films because producers and filmmakers remain concerned about whether a female-led project can attract audiences to cinemas.
Radhika, who is currently promoting her upcoming Netflix series Akka, spoke honestly about the business realities of the Hindi film industry. She explained that the theatrical market has become unpredictable in recent years, making it difficult to determine which films will perform well at the box office.
Radhika Apte Says Female-Led Films Face Box-Office Uncertainty
In an interview with PTI, Radhika said that a film’s theatrical prospects can influence the opportunities available to female actors. She believes that even a well-made film featuring a woman in the lead role may struggle to secure a strong opening unless the actor already has significant box-office pull.
Speaking about the situation, Radhika said, “A theatrical release where I am the lead would probably tank even if it’s the best film.”
The actor added that she does not enjoy the same level of commercial recognition as some of Bollywood’s biggest female stars, such as Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone. According to her, established stars may have a better chance of attracting audiences to theatres, even though box-office success is never guaranteed.
Radhika explained that this uncertainty can push female actors towards projects in which male actors play the central roles. She said that, given the current circumstances, she often has to be part of films where men take the lead.
Her comments have highlighted an ongoing discussion in the film industry about the commercial risks associated with female-led theatrical projects and the opportunities available to actresses beyond supporting roles.
Radhika Apte Says She Does Not Choose Films Based on OTT or Theatrical Release
Radhika has seen several of her recent films, including Lust Stories 3, Saali Mohabbat, Mrs Undercover and Monica, O My Darling, reach audiences through streaming platforms. However, she clarified that the choice between a theatrical release and an OTT premiere does not determine whether she accepts a project.
The actor said she is more interested in the work itself than the platform on which it eventually releases. She also acknowledged that several business decisions influence a film’s release strategy, adding that she would rather see a project reach audiences in whatever way possible.
Her approach reflects the changing entertainment landscape, where streaming platforms have created additional opportunities for actors and filmmakers to tell stories that may not always receive a wide theatrical release.
For Radhika, the priority is not whether a film arrives in cinemas or on a digital platform, but whether the project gets an opportunity to be seen.
Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone’s Box-Office Pull
While discussing the challenges faced by female-led films, Radhika referred to Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone as examples of actresses who can offer filmmakers greater hope of securing an opening at the box office.
Alia has headlined Gangubai Kathiawadi, which became a notable commercial success and an important example of a female-led Hindi film performing well theatrically. However, the box-office performance of a film depends on several factors, including its story, marketing, audience response and release strategy.
Alia has also appeared in successful films such as Brahmastra, RRR and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. These projects demonstrated her presence in commercially successful cinema, although several featured prominent male co-stars or ensemble casts.
Similarly, Deepika has been part of major box-office successes, including Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, as well as Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan.
Radhika’s point was not that female stars automatically guarantee a hit, but that established box-office recognition can make it easier for certain actresses to secure opportunities to lead theatrical projects.
Radhika Apte Is Ready for Akka With Keerthy Suresh
Meanwhile, Radhika is preparing for the release of her upcoming Netflix series Akka, which also stars Keerthy Suresh in a leading role.
Set in the 1980s, the series is described as a gangster drama and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2026. The project brings Radhika back to the streaming space, where she has previously appeared in several acclaimed films and series.
As she looks forward to the release, her comments about the difficulties facing female-led theatrical films have once again drawn attention to the question of how the industry measures a film’s commercial potential.
Radhika Apte’s candid remarks underline a larger challenge for Bollywood: creating more opportunities for women to headline theatrical films without allowing box-office uncertainty to limit the stories that get made. While streaming platforms have opened new doors, the question of equal opportunities and commercial confidence for female-led cinema remains an important conversation.
