Robin Uthappa Warns 14-Year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ahead of Indian Premier League 2026: “He Is Riding His Luck”
Young cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already achieved remarkable milestones at just 14 years old, but former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes the youngster still has a lot to learn ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
Speaking ahead of Sooryavanshi’s second IPL campaign, Uthappa cautioned that the teenage batter might currently be “riding his luck” and that the upcoming season could be a crucial learning phase for him.
Uthappa’s Honest Assessment
Uthappa, who has closely followed the youngster’s performances over the past year, praised Sooryavanshi’s immense talent but pointed out that the hype surrounding him may start to settle.
“I have been keenly observing every game Vaibhav is playing over the last 12 months. He is phenomenal. But if you watch him bat, I feel he is riding his luck a little bit,” Uthappa said while speaking on Star Sports.
He added that the novelty factor of a teenage prodigy has begun to fade and tougher challenges could lie ahead.
“The novelty has worn off. Right now he is riding that luck a little bit, which is fine. I think this season will be educational for him and will serve him in the long run,” Uthappa explained.
A Historic Rise in IPL
Despite his young age, Sooryavanshi has already made history in the IPL. The batter became the youngest player ever to be bought in the tournament and quickly justified the excitement around him.
Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi announced himself in spectacular fashion by smashing a six on the very first ball he faced in his IPL career. Just two matches later, he stunned fans by scoring a blistering 35-ball century against the Gujarat Titans, setting multiple records in the process.
During the IPL 2025 season, the youngster scored 252 runs in seven matches at an incredible strike rate of 206.55 — the highest among players who scored more than 100 runs that season.
Key Role Expected in IPL 2026
Now approaching his 15th birthday, Sooryavanshi is expected to play a major role for the Royals in the upcoming season. He is likely to open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, forming one of the most exciting young partnerships in the tournament.
The team will enter IPL 2026 with a fresh look. The Royals have strengthened their squad by bringing in Ravindra Jadeja, while long-time captain Sanju Samson has moved to the Chennai Super Kings. The franchise will now be led by Riyan Parag.
While expectations around Sooryavanshi remain sky-high, Uthappa believes the upcoming IPL season will test the teenager’s ability to adapt and grow as bowlers study his game more closely.
For one of cricket’s youngest stars, IPL 2026 may prove to be not just another season—but an important step in shaping a long-term career.
